What We Do

Our projects
At KYLI, we recognize the unique challenges affecting Karamoja and are committed to addressing these issues through impactful programs. Our thematic focus areas align with our mission and vision to drive sustainable development in our community.
Education & Youth Empowerment

Karamoja continues to face alarmingly low literacy levels, with high dropout rates and limited access to quality education. At KYLI, we believe education is the foundation of lasting transformation. Our programs are designed to keep children in school, build their confidence, and prepare them for a brighter future.

Mentorship & Career Guidance – We mentor young people to develop leadership skills, life skills, and career plans that help them transition from school to employment or entrepreneurship.

Parental Engagement – We actively involve parents in supporting their children’s education, ensuring school attendance and reducing dropout rates.

School Retention Strategies – We address challenges like poverty, early marriages, and cultural practices that hinder education, working closely with schools and communities to keep students enrolled.

Student Exchange Programs – By facilitating cultural and educational exchange visits within and outside Karamoja, we broaden students’ perspectives and expose them to best practices in learning.

Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment

Unemployment and lack of opportunities leave many young people in Karamoja vulnerable. KYLI equips youth with practical, marketable skills to become self-reliant and economically empowered.

Smart Agriculture & Food Security – We promote short-season crops, fruit and vegetable farming, poultry keeping, and fishing to ensure sustainable food and income sources.

Vocational Skilling & Entrepreneurship – Young people are trained in hands-on trades that open pathways to business and employment, including:

Carpentry & metal fabrication

Tailoring & fashion design

Agro-processing

Solar installation & electrical works

Motorcycle & vehicle mechanics

Soap & detergent making

Partnerships with Training Centers – We work with established vocational institutions to provide accredited training and hands-on experience, giving youth practical skills that lead to sustainable jobs.

Environment & Climate Resilience

Karamoja’s semi-arid climate, unpredictable rains, and frequent droughts threaten food security and fuel conflicts over scarce resources. KYLI works to protect the environment and build community resilience against climate change.

Tree Planting & Reforestation – Through our flagship campaign “Plant a Tree, Green Karamoja”, we combat deforestation, restore degraded land, and promote fruit tree planting for both nutrition and income.

Water Conservation & Irrigation – We encourage communities to adopt water harvesting technologies, efficient irrigation, and climate-smart practices to sustain agriculture even in harsh conditions.

Alternative Livelihoods & Climate Adaptation – We reduce over-dependence on cattle and rain-fed farming by promoting drought-resistant crops, sustainable land management, and green enterprises.

Disaster Risk Reduction & Community Awareness – Communities are trained on disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and climate adaptation strategies to reduce the impact of environmental shocks.
